Sonoma Wineries & Wine Estates Healdsburg

Wineries and beautiful wine estates abound near Healdsburg, in Sonoma County, about 70 miles north of San Francisco.

This is the center of three of the most important wine-producing regions in northern California – the Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander Valley appellations.

We visited Healdsburg this past weekend to take part in the annual wine road winter festival. For three days – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – about 140 wineries opened their doors to the public for wine tasting. Many of these wineries are not normally open to the public, but with a $50 ticket, you could wander the back roads for three days and visit wineries and sample wonderful wine (By the way, someone in the party had to be a designated driver – no wine, sorry).

Wine making is a culture here. It’s also beautiful country.

You have people who have come here and started from scratch. I met a winemaker couple during the weekend, who bought land and cleared it and planted vines several years ago, who now have a thriving lovely small winery.

Others like to come here and buy an existing winery, some to just enjoy, or have the status of being associated with this kind of life, others for investment reasons.

If you are thinking of buying a winery, many properties ready for sale never appear on the local multiple listing service. The owners want privacy. So you would need someone with an inside track to these owners and properties, and someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the business.
