Aix-en-Provence, in the Provence region of southern France, is one of the loveliest cities in France. The center of the city is its old town, filled with cafes and bookstores, and beautiful old buildings. Aix is sometimes called the city of a thousand fountains.

The city was founded in 123 B.C. by the Romans, and it still retains a Roman air. Aix has a warm mediterranean climate. The city has long been a center for education and the arts. Aix is filled with students from all over the world. The most famous citizen of Aix was the great painter, Paul Cezanne; and just to the east of Aix is Mont Sainte-Victoire, which Cezanne loved to paint.
