The Provence region of southern France, of course, is one of the most visited areas in France. This is an area of sun and wine and lavender, and lovely ancient villages.

One of the most famous villages in the world, as far as wine goes, is located here – the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

This winelover’s paradise is just a short distance north of Avignon in the Vaucluse department in Provence.

In 1308, Pope Clement V, relocated the papacy to the city of Avignon, where it remained for the next 70 years.  The Avignon Popes were reputed to be great lovers of wine, and the papacy began promoting viticulture in the surrounding area, more specifically just north of Avignon, where Chateauneuf-du-Pape is located.

The village abounds with wineshops, and there is a lovely restaurant at the top of the hill, where you can enjoy the wonderful wines with your lunch, as you look out over the surrounding countryside and vineyards.
